The real local religious fanatics you’ve invented for your argument? Are they more real than the ones coffee invented? In your head maybe……

"No no no, I meant the real local religious fanatic. Not the made-up bollocks one in your head. Is this confusing you?"

Ah OK - so it’s not bollocks after all. You just don’t want dogma discussed in the context of the belief in God. Have you told your local religious fanatic that his form of belief in God is less good than yours yet?

"If I've understood correctly, the topic asks if you believe in God. Not if you're blindly subservient to religious dogma."

Religious faith that leads to a blind subservience to dogma is rightly condemned in Islam and by all religions. And yes of course it is at the root of enormous violence and suffering.

Coffee 12:29 Sun Dec 10 Sorry but that is bollocks. It is happening right now and has done since the start of recorded history. You could argue that our species innate tribalism is the root cause but religeous differences have often been the excuse for mass murder and genocide.

"zeb Faith - a belief in God - has not caused millions of deaths. Religion has insofar as it's been abused, but not faith."

Wils 11:11 Sun Dec 3 That was Bertrand Russel's whole point and it was to counter many arguments put forwards by other philosophers (Descartes being the obvious target) to disprove their argument proving the existence of God. God's existence is inherently untestable which is precisely why religeons have been so strong.Faith transcends reality and rational argument which is why belief is so string. Us meatbags can convince ourselves that plainly ludicrous things are the gospel truth and the intestability of these beliefs makes them stronger to the faithful. It is a very dangerous trait as has been demonstrated thoughout history and has caused millions upon millions to die.

"Willtell wrote... Re: Do you believe in God? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzfIE9SW-Jc This gives all religious people reason to think about the big question...worth the full watch. Having listened and watched the above YouTube clip in which Neil deGrasse Tyson outlines an argument for why science and religion are not compatible (and although as many have said religion and God are not necessarily the same thing), some of you might be interested in going to this web-site for a counter view. https://www.faraday.cam.ac.uk/ Here you will find: The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion is a Cambridge-based interdisciplinary research institute improving public understanding of religious beliefs in relation to the sciences. Please be warned that the materials here won't be as simple as 10-minute entertaining YouTube clips and they are not populist in their approach but most of the contributors are probably more eminent in their fields than deGrasse Tyson is in his and they cover a much wider breadth of science than just Astrophysics. If I were looking to counter De-Grasse Tyson's claim about patterns of order in the Universe I might start with this lecture which is available from the site. https://www.faraday.cam.ac.uk/resources/multimedia/the-necessity-of-chance-randomness-purpose-and-the-sovereignty-of-god/"

"Arsene york-hunt 12:42 Sun Dec 3 ""I passionately believe in Bertrand Russell's celestial teapot, and anybody who doesn't should be stoned to death."" So much wrong with Bertrand Russell's celestial teapot apart from it failing prima facie plausibility - the celestial teapot and God are not 'on the face of it' equally plausible/implausible. There is clear rhetorical value in the argument but a quick Google would show you it fails to convince anyone who wasn't already emotionally invested in satisfying themselves of the non existence of God. More importantly, Christian dogma, at least, is quite clear that God 'is not a thing' so even if you were somehow to convince yourself they were equally plausible the argument isn't cogent in the first place. There are plenty of good arguments for the non existence of God, but this aint it chief."

Mental though you’d better be sorted for Es and wiz or that’s a godawful headache rather than a spiritual experience
