We had to finish above Newcastle in the league in order to qualify for the Conference League. Teams often field weakened sides in the EFL Cup. The winner of the EFL Cup qualifies for the Conference League.

The number of people now suddenly willing to forgive Moyes for the last 18 months of domestic tripe that he has stubornly served up is embarrassing. The thing is I can't currently see that anything will be different in the prem league next season. I'm aware what he is achieving in Europe is very special but when we start again next season is he capable of us suddenly becoming a much better team? I'm actually interested to hear how he's going to change things cos his current team is easily good enough already
