"love/hate a little dated now, you'll recognise a few actors who went onto other things, inc kin and peaky blinders. well worth a look imo."

"Oops 'Montgomery's troops are attacking there's *points at map* 'yeah I don't like that guy, I think he's overrated '. What really pisses me off about that is that it's apropos of nothing - it doesn't help the plot along in any way and just seems like it was added to appeal to Americans who already think that it was them alone that won the war. Watch most American WW2 films for more of the same."

"Northern Sold 1:53 Tue Feb 6 'helps that Hanks and Spielberg are involved... you know they will give to total respect to the players involved'... It's true that I don't share your infatuation with the septics but surely you know you're talking bollocks there. For instance, in Saving Private Ryan the British get mentioned ONCE in the entire film in an exchange that goes something like 'Monty"

"Totally agree Ludo21, the state of the planes each time they returned is mind boggling. Firstly that they were able to still fly but also that they were then able to be repaired to the point of being able to go again. When you consider the levels of checks each passenger plane undergoes these days before being allowed to take off can you imagine your horror if you knew that the plane you were about to take off in looked like it had been shredded only a couple of days previous."

Watched the latest episode 5 of Masters of the Air at the weekend... best one so far. How you could go through that and then get in a plane and do it all again a few days later is beyond me. The series really conveys the horror of what it must have been like... it must have been truly terrifying!

"Yes NS, totally true story that he was almost killed by a bullet pinging off his helmet. To think that WWII was less than 80 yrs ago just seems so surreal. How the world has changed in such a short space of time, true hero's each and every one of them."

Jim... IIRC he got hit in the head in Holland?? Knocked his helmet clean off but it saved his life. Rewatched this again last night... if any Band of Brothers fans have not seen it's quite magnificent. Bless them all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6j_nop4wh0

Jim79 1:23 Tue Feb 6 Not sure if true but I read that Nixon did not fire a shot in anger during WW2. There is a great photo of him in bed looking very much the worse for wear and reaching for a bottle from a case of drinks next to his bed having 'liberated' them from Goebbels house.

"Saul David's book - SBS Silent Warriors, primarily about the WW2 Folbot Canoeists would make a fantastic mini series which would take in Operation Frankton. Another is Mike Langley's book about Anders Lassen which covers the SAS / SBS in the Aegean which again would make a great series. Both books are well worth a read."

"BRANDED... gather you are talking about the Tuskegee Airmen?? There story has been told quite a few times including a few films about their story... I'd imagine being a segregated squadron there probably would not be any shocks... too be fair at least they had a chance to actually fight... a lot of the blacks in the army normally got the non fighting shit jobs... cooks, pioneers, truck drivers etc..."

I believe there is about to be some black airmen ( all true) and their relationships with white ones in a time of segregation. Should be fun to see how they do it. I find a strange glamour in the show that distracts from the absolute horrors or their existence. I think Starship Troopers did it better.

Masters of the Air is screen played from two books basically... the title name by Don Miller and Luck of the Draw (Frank Murphy) ... both great reads if you get the chance... same as the Pacific (Helmet for a pillow) and Band of Brothers (the Stephen Ambrose novel)... what I love about all three is the story is told... nothing needs to be added... the story of what these men went through don't need bells and whistles added... it's enough and that's the complete and utter brilliance of it... helps that Hanks and Spielberg are involved... you know they will give to total respect to the players involved... something the BBC found very hard to do in that SAS Rogue Heroes gay fest woke shit show... it's the one thing that rankles me... the Brits have just as great stories as the trio of masterpieces the yanks have put out.... if you get the chance read Pegasus Bridge (Stephen Ambrose... yup an American historian).... it would make every bit as good spectacle as Band of Brothers... incredible story about an incredible group of men.... I just hope if it does go into production that the Brits are nowhere near producing it. I mean isn't there meant to be a remake of the Dambusters?? I bet they have even written out the Black Lab... leave alone please.

"Ludo, I agree on the BoB front, its the most perfect specimen of Television ever created in my mind. Masters of the Air may not live up to that hype but its certainly closer than the Pacific ever got. I've mentioned previously but in the last few years I've become quite friendly with Ron Livingstone the US actor who played Capt Lewis Nixon in BoB and the core cast still meet up ever year or two to commemorate the filming. They created a real bond filming it and actually did basic army training together in prep for their roles. Given the level of fame some of them went on to have after it shows how special that show was that they all still make the effort to meet up."

What a steaming pile of shit that True Detective is. I’m gutted I didn’t follow my instincts to bin it half way through the first episode and somehow got all the way to the start of the third.

.... I've answered my own question... it did happen apparently. landed in Tunisia (not Algeria as I suggested). 60 of the 122 bombers that landed in Tunisia were damaged.

"""Alfs 5:34 Sun Feb 4 Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls As I said, Manuel, don't compare. Ben Kingsley is an incredible actor and his performance in the film was stunning"" I never really rated the film and found Kingsley to overact, to the point he was like a cardboard cut out gangster and it ruined the film."
