NFL (since 2016)

"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

"great day two. picked up a beast DT projected to go top twenty but fell because of a foot surgery., the best spot received in the draft and one of michigan's captains, a complete tight end, finally a big strong LT and ending up taking Christian Mccaffrey's brother who's still improving at WR"

"Jets took a decent, versatile receiver (Corley) with the opening pick of round 3. Quite happy with that. He can play slot and outside. Just needs a good offense coach (big challenge for us!). Two decent picks so far, in what was always likely to be a quieter pre-season than last year. Some teams made really strong second and third round selections. Both rounds were stacked with ""decent""ù talent because so many sides overspent on Rnd1. Unsurprisingly, no QBs taken on day 2 after six first rounders. It makes no sense at all: some of those early QBs are more realistically second and third rounders - and some teams are going to get lumped with big wage deals for bang average talent. The QB premium is getting bonkers. It's the most important role, so I get why it happens. But the gap between hope and reality is nuts right now."

Very happy with that pick south. Even more happy our GM didn't reach and sell off the future on a QB your not 100% on. GO GMEN

Very young. And very raw Far. But the experts reckon if he coached well. And given time There's a very talented QB in there.

"True, Shorty. Although Penix might have a worse injury record. I'm not sure he played a full college season through his career. The kid clearly has talent, though. Anyway, it's Atlanta's problem - and thankfully not ours! Your (Giants) WR is a good pick. I say that through gritted teeth!"

Maybe Atlanta know Cousins body might not hold up over the contract.? It's a real head starcher for anyone outside the room. But GM's live and die on the hill of their QB choices. GO GMEN.

"Let's be honest, Atlanta will have known there was a decent chance they'd take a QB with #8 pick back when they signed Cousins for $180m. Maybe they wanted Alt (OT) or somebody more, but he was off the board? But they would have known a QB was an option for the top-ten pick - you always have back up plans. So they should have told Cousins before he signed. And then, even if they did not, they could have made one phone call to him at any time before the draft and explained an already-embarrassing situation. But, according to Cousins, did not even do that until they were on the board. It is mental."

"Totally agree. Penix looks decent. But, if what Cousins is saying is true - and the franchise didn't tell him - then that is astronomically bad. It's not Penix's fault. But Cousins has every right to be furious with Atlanta. You have to manage players, and not always manage decisions. There will be at least some bad blood in the dressing room and at the training ground now (and not necessarily between the two QBs: Cousins is generally pretty grounded) - from day one. It's almost Jets-like in its atrociousness!"

"SB, just had a look at Cousins contract. The earliest they can move him where it doesn't cost a fortune is 2027, where the cap hit will be $12.5m. That means Penix is possibly sitting for three years, madness"

"SB, no problem with Penix, he's a good player and a few teams wanted him. it just makes no sense if you've invested that much in Cousins. JJ is a better comp, is three years younger and was still on the board. Absolute mental cunts"

"I'd even consider asking for a trade. Not because of the competition - that's fine - but because you couldn't trust the people running the franchise, the GM, the coaches etc. How can Cousins trust a word they say in future? Not a great start to his Atlanta career!"

"Let me be clear, though: I have no problem with NFL teams drafting high-pick QBs when they already have a clear starter. Especially when that starter is 35 years-old etc. In my view, sides should draft a QB that can spend some time on the sidelines learning from the starter, getting to know the playbook and getting some proper professional coaching. I don't like this modern obsession with picking high-pick QBs and throwing them straight in as starter - with everything at the franchise hanging on them. The Falcons have picked a guy to become their ""future"" QB. No problem. BUT... IF you're going to take that approach, you should tell you newly signed 35 year-old starter (on a $180m 4-year contract) that's what you're going to do. Or, at least, that's what you might do if the right man is on the baord at the draft. But failing to tell Cousins, who they've just signed expensively and who assumes he's their man...that's utterly shit. On every level. I imagine Cousins was told he was #1 choice at QB, would be a multi-year starter etc etc. He could have gone elsewhere if he was told they'd draft a QB in the top ten. I think it's fucking low for that reason alone. I'd be furious if I was Cousins and did not know that was happening."

"Nubin, Hicks, Bullard, Bullock, Taylor, Tykee Smith... Some will go in Rnd 2 and some will even drop to Rnd 3 or 4. Some teams are going to get bargains at safety tonight. I'd be focused on putting together my backfield combination for the next five years."

"The Penix thing is weird. From what I read about the draft prospect QBs Michael Penix Jr appeared to be the most Kirk Cousins-a-like of all of them. Someone who gets rid of the ball quickly, throws safely and doesn't take sacks. Not surprised that Cousins is a bit miffed."

"The Eagles and Lions may well have picked up top-ten talent with picks #22 and #24 - purely because of the QB/offensive premium. Those two corners have both looked very good at college. Different game in the pros, of course. A more rational draft (does not exist!) would have had three or so defensive players going in the top 10 this year."

"Massively distorted first round - probably the most overspent first round in decades, because of the QBs. But still some real talent drafted. I like Odunze - he has the potential to be a very solid and consistent WR if he's coached well (could say that about many rookies, of course). So the Bears had a good day with Williams at #1 and his future primary target in the same draft. Don't know about Daniels and Maye at #2 and #3: both talented, but going in those positions seems like the QB premium in action. Likewise, Penix, McCarthy and Nix. Some of those QBs will do well, don't get me wrong, but each of them carries a risk if they're not well looked after and coached - and there were more 'NFL ready' players on the board at the time (like Alt and Latham). But the biggest surprise was no defensive player taken until the Colts with pick #15. That is a bit nuts. It means there are still some rich pickings for defensive players in Rnd2 - especially at cornerback and safety. Not a single safety taken in Rnd1, and yet there are some good, mobile and hard-hitting backfield players in the draft. There is a lot to compete for tonight and I'd expect to see a fair bit of trading. Although the Jets don't currently have a Rnd 2 pick - so we're out of that for now. A shrewd team/GM could pick up some absolute bargains tonight - even if they overspend in a mad first round."

"what a fuck up - The most used sentence in Washington in perpetuity!! Good Luck to Jaydon Daniels, I hope you fare better than our last five 1st Round QB picks. I'm sure Patrick Ramsey played for more teams than games started for the 'skins"

"we had twenty five years of that penix type shit, when snyder was the owner. I like him michael, but you've just commited 130m on a quarterback and draft another one at 8, and an older model at 24? mccarthy at 21 would have made some sense learning behind kirk, but it shows the mixed thinking at some franchises I watched a video of terry mclaurin's draft call again yesterday just to see if my memory wasn't tricking me when I thought I'd remembered snyder jumping in on the call. yes, he even had to be involved with a third round pick"

"Odd trade by the Vikings, too, to come up one pick and give us 4th and 5th rounders. We were not going to draft JJ McCarthy (decent QB though he is). Clearly a bluff, or another team offering to trade up. Still, we needed picks. Now we've got them."

"Crazy first round! Six QBs in the first 12 picks is bonkers. But we got the O-lineman we needed. Alt was always going to be off the board by the time we picked, so Fashanu was probably the right choice for us. Now we have some depth at tackle. But the coaches need to get to work."
