Well all that must have transpired during my wilderness years in America, when there was very little internet and next to no news about "soccer" and cricket but at least I did learn all about the double switch in baseball and I did go to a mass brawl where suddenly a hockey game broke out.

Yes, mate. He went on at least two years too long. Basically, his eyes and judgment had gone, but teams and captains had loved him for years and knew he would never dream of giving a biased decision. Basically, they'd rather trust Dickie's failing powers of observation and put up with the odd rotter (which they knew would go both ways), than play under some other cheating idiot.

This from Chat GPT (Oh, Yes!)In the final years of his career, Dickie Bird did face criticism for some of his decisions, which is not uncommon for umpires as they age and their performance can be scrutinized more closely. Some observers noted that he made a few controversial calls during matches, which led to discussions about whether he should have continued officiating at that level. However, it's important to recognize that umpiring is a challenging role, and even the best umpires can make mistakes, especially in high-pressure situations. Bird's long career and experience were significant assets, but like any professional, he was not immune to errors. Despite any criticisms, he remains a respected figure in cricket, known for his contributions to the sport and his unique personality on the field.

Another shit ref. Absolutely abysmal. And worse than that, at some point, he became cocky and arrogant and often tried to be the "man of the match". Thought he was bigger than the players. No doubt, it went to his head and that was probably because the FA made sure the red carpet was rolled out to him where ever he went because he was 'their' man.

I honestly am struggling to think of a worse ref.

Maybe it's the memory failing me . But he wasn't remotely as bad as most of the useless Pratt's now .

As I recall, he turned a bit Dickie Bird-like shit at the end, but players tolerated it because he was a pretty decent ref that you never thought was bent. He was built like a brick shit-house, too, so nobody fucked with him.

RIP Uriah - rotten disease..

I know it's bad to speak ill of the dead, but he was a shit ref. i hope his judgement as a magistrate was better than that as a referee.

I posted before you, you cսnt, and I was stating a fact. You're only offended because of his skin colour. If it was a Keith Hackett death thread, you wouldn't have said a word
And there you have it. If you want to know why all the decent posters on a once busy forum have pissed off, leaving just the dregs in a ghost town of a forum, I give you example A.
No it's not, you self absorbed wally.

Not being able to say stuff without someone being offended would be a bigger reason.

So now we need to be nice to referees we didn't know personally,  just because he's dead.

Alf Buksh was of Fijian descent and lived round the corner from my mate in Cricklewood.

He refereed the league cup game at home to Wimbledon n the late 80s and totally lost control.

He sent Dicks off for an innocuous decapitation attempt on Dennis Wise thus reducing us to ten men.and a full-scale brawl broke out to add further spice

The Dirty dons were up to all sorts of dark arts but came unstuck when Mad dog struck that sweet volley that really didn't belong in a match of that kind.

Devonshire came on in the second half of that game after being out injured and his class and character shone as he rode endless challenges and attempts to maim him

I came home from that game totally hoarse bereft of any change (which somehow ended up on the pitch) and so proud of my team

Macaris finest hour as West ham manager.
