"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

"Awful situation and I hope the fella involved makes a full recovery, like Eriksen. Read that it seemed to come from heavy contact with his chest, which is always an unfortunate risk. The two head coaches, and players on both sides, deserve credit for refusing to continue when officials asked. It's too dangerous a game to have people distracted or concerned and not fully focused - other injuries would have followed. Bills went up in my estimation after that."

Wondered what happened. Got up to watch the 40 minutes highlights this morning and assumed that there was bad weather when I saw it was suspended. Well done to the coaches. What a brutal thing to happen. Hopefully the prompt medical attention will mean he lives to fight another day. No way can anyone play a game after that.

"Just reading that the officials were told to carry on playing 5 mins after he was carted off the field after receiving CPR. Both coaches told them to fuck off. I know the saying that the show must go on, but surely there limits?!"

"Shocking scenes at the Bills v Bengals game, Damar Hamlin given CPR on the pitch. Just went in for a normal tackle, got up then a second later literally just fell backwards. Not looking good."

bobbymoore 12:53 Mon Jan 2 Well done. Even if I'd got my bench decisions right your team would still have stuffed mine out of sigh as Daniel Jones smashed it.

"Zach Wilson is going through something very similar right now. He probably needed to learn that he's not god (that's Elway!), and that he has to cut the ego and focus on learning how to be effective and win at the highest level. What's happened instead is that he swaggered into New York, thought he was the best thing since sliced bread having been the #2 overall pick, allegedly got a bit carried away by the milf market (certainly distracted by some off-field issues), and rubbed his team-mates up the wrong way. Now, he's crashed back down to Earth and has lost all confidence because it has dawned on him that he's not god's gift unless he works like a dog and cuts out the nonsense. He's been found out. We'll see if he has the character to bounce back. Maybe he will."

"Don't get me wrong - Geno also had his flaws in New York and some of them were very much of his own making. Often they were about his early-career ego, which is common among high-pick QBs who had been idolised at university, to whom few people had ever said ""no"" and they had not (yet) experienced failure as part of their learning curve. Geno had a huge ego coming out of college. He'd led (very well) a successful university side, and was personally expecting to be drafted in the first round - even though he wasn't quite top-30 standard that year. He handled the draft process badly - people thought he was arrogant for expecting to go in the first round and, when he didn't, he sacked his agents. That should have been a bit of a red flag - to him. He needed to rein in his ego. So when he encountered his early struggles in the NFL, which most young QBs encounter, he didn't seem to have the experience or character to deal with the challenges the professional league throws at you. He needed time to learn the game at the highest level, and also to manage his own ego so that he became more of a team player. It's no coincidence that he's now playing arguably the best football of his career now that he's 32, has experienced the trials and tribulations of the game and is a much older, wiser and less egotistical head. If he'd been a little more like that at the Jets, he'd have done better. But that's how the game - and extreme wealth, adulation and pressure - at a young age, can get you."

"you know things are bad when the head coach don't why have a clue about the implications of a home loss"" I saw that in his press conference. What a joke I've thought for a while that he gives the air of someone who doesn't really give a shit. Not recognising where his team is in the playoff picture is staggering"

"That sounds exactly right, sbbb, given that Geno's calmness and composure under pressure has been a real asset this year. That's the kind of confidence you can normally only get after time getting the feel of the league. Spending time as a back up seems essential for QBs to properly flourish, as a general rule."

"OGS - agree with you re: Geno. The Jets mis-managed him, as they have so many other QBs. They drafted him in round 2, yet felt the need to start him immediately - and it placed a huge amount of undue pressure on him to win games straight away. He wasn't given enough time to sit on the bench, learn the playbook and ease his way into the franchise. The Jets ruin a lot of QBs that way. It's a ""win now"" league these days - and the pressure is on franchises (not just the Jets) to start high-pick QBs straight away. I still like the older model of allowing them to sit on the bench, work in training and learn the game for a season or two first. Ironically, the last QB the Jets allowed to 'sit and learn' was Pennington - and, until he was injured, he was very good for us. He was a 1st round pick, but we already had Testaverde at the time, so Pennington wasn't asked to start games until Vinny got injured. Much less pressure on him, and time to learn the playbooks, as a consequence. Maybe Zach Wilson needs to sit and learn behind a more mature QB1."

"Joe C 12:57 Mon Jan 2 Enjoy, will be an excellent end of season if the Hawks beat the Rams, make the play offs, and still end up with a top 5 pick. Not been to Seattle yet but saw the Hawks at Wembley close up. Called Seattle at 8-9 in the preseason predictions and thought that was wildly optimistic. southbank - On the subject of Jets QBs, Hawks seem to have done well out of Geno this year. He's been arguably a level above journeyman/game manager and certainly a decent starter."

"you know things are bad when the head coach don't why have a clue about the implications of a home loss. rivera asked about what he'll do about the starting qb in week eighteen if eliminated from the playoffs if the packers won.... ""We can be eliminated?"" . that was the icing on the cake of another terrible season. he's the nicest person in the world but a bad head coach. the franchise has been filled with ex panther colleagues and players rather than the best available and we're about to see a third consecutive losing season. organisations can't succeed where nepotism thrives, we have by far the worst play caller in the league (scott turner, son of norv) yet he won't be fired because of his dad's history with ron. rivera's also been given so much power that he's the defacto GM, where every hire & fire goes through him so how can a team be accountable if no one is holding him to a required standard? the only positive is the future sale of the franchise"

"The Jets are facing their seemingly eternal dilemma in the off-season, having now lost five games in a row: Find a quarterback who is a genuine NFL starter. This issue has dogged us for decades - probably since O'Brien (1980s) and certainly since the golden era of Broadway Joe. Basically, the Jets have only had two, arguably three, genuinely decent quaterbacks in their history: Namath, O'Brien and the pre-injury Chad Pennington. With the exception of Favre, who turned up in Gotham just before he retired, every other QB has been a bust, over-rated, over-promoted or little more than a decent back-up standard. Three good QBs in 62 years of history! For all of the hype and fuss around him - and his obvious talent - Zach Wilson has turned out to have the very character flaws many of us suspected he would have when he wandered into Gotham: big ego/small town mentality, refusal to sit and learn, kid in a (milf!) candy store and, underneath it all, an (so far) inability to deal with real pressure and responsibility. As a consequence, he's gone backwards in his two seasons. Mike White has been a surprisingly half-decent back-up, but that's all he is: a back-up. We need to re-sign him for next season (he's an unrestricted free agent in January). But what the franchise decides to do with Zach Wilson will now define the improving Saleh's tenure. This is a young roster packed with genuine talent - but it needs a leader at QB and somebody who can play pragmatic football, make his check-downs and move the sticks. Wilson has tried too hard to be a superstar, found out he's not (yet) that good, hasn't worked hard enough on his game and has consequently lost all confidence. Worse, he's been a bit of dick in the locker room and training - so his team-mates aren't overly keen on him. Unlike last season, I don't really have major concerns about Saleh at this point: he's shown genuine improvement as a head coach this season, even though the wheels have fallen off in the past few weeks. Specifically, our defense has improved in terms of structure, playbook and quality - and that's Saleh's side of the game. So he's having an effect now. But we need to find a QB. There's talk of Jimmy G from the Niners. I actually think he has the character to improve us and to cope with the media and fans' attention in New York (which can ruin players). What the Raiders do with Carr will also keep the Jets interested. But there are few other options for trades or free agency - and this year's draft looks thin for QBs. Another left-field option: Baker Mayfield (who, despite his own problems, I actually think has the ability and ""fuck you"" mentality to succeed in New York. I'd be tempted to sign Mayfield when he becomes a free agent (from the Rams) in Jan/Feb, then re-sign Mike White and force Wilson and White to compete for the back-up job next season (trading the 'losing' player once the 2023 season starts). It's that or Jimmy G, by the looks of it."

"I'm off to Seattle on Friday to watch our game v the Rams. Don't like having to rely on the Lions having to beat the Packers, so am sure Goff will find another way to make me hate him even more - but that's the cost of losing to shit like the Panthers and the Falcons. Whatever happens though, been a much better season than I expected, and we'll get a great draft pick thanks to Denver"

"Raiders have some players on offense, Devante Adams, Jacobs, Waller, Renfrow etc: Stidham played the game of his life and Devante Adams made some amazing catches. If that's what it takes to put up pass yards on our D then I'll take it. They were playing for their playoff lives yet we still won. Niners D made some big plays, especially in the second half when it counted, Our Offense was lights out""¶.. # 2 seed baby! Feels good!"

"Grumpster, It is a bit worrying how many yds/pts the Raiders have gained today, but the Raiders can be like that. One of the NFL's great underachievers but capable of inexplicable, very effective performances. I think they found it hard to plan/scheme for Stidham."
