NFL (since 2016)

"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

"Secondary has been the worst in the nfl the past few weeks. Fair enough against decent teams and QB's, but it's all been against average shit which is worrying."

"So, I'll squeeze this one in ahead of the play-offs - which should get interesting. Jets offensive co-ordinator, Mike LaFleur, has been kicked out after two poor seasons. His HC, Saleh, improved last year on the defensive side of the ball - but LaFleur's offense was horrible the moment Breese Hall (RB) got injured. And clearly LaFleur has taken the fall for the Jets' failure to develop Zach Wilson after a #2 pick. I hate constant coaching churn. But this does seem like a decent move - and we haven't lost yet another head coach. Saleh and GM Joe Douglas now have a big decision to make on the OC (they've also sacked their offensive line coach, who was close with LaFleur). Early indications are that the Jets will chase Fish QB coach Darrell Bevell (who previously worked with Saleh at Seattle), Texans OC Pep Hamilton or - should McVay step down from the Rams - their veteran OC Greg Olson. Nothing is ever stable in Gotham. But I guess this makes sense. LaFleur was a disaster."

"Yeah, mortgaging the Rams' future was definitely a high-risk strategy and was always going to have a designed down-side. I think McVay always knew it. The Rams' ""problem"" was that it worked. Most attempts at buying the title fail. So SM will walk away with a good rep. Some will criticise him for that because he won't be around to deal with the shitty bits. The franchise will have to pick up the pieces. But they did win the whole thing. Remains to be seen what the long-term implications of that will be once they don't have the coach who achieved it."

"I think both things are right about McVay. No doubt he's all in and a good coach, but he is leaving a mess having mortgaged and gambled the short/mid term future of the franchise for a super bowl by adding (ageing) big names on big contracts and dealing draft picks. I'm willing to bet Aaron Donald and a few others don't want to wait around for a rebuild But it worked as they did win, and most fanbases would probably gladly take a bit of purgatory and a few years in the doldrums in exchange to win it all."

"Even though the Jets lost their last six games and the wheels fell of the season, it is a refreshing change as a fan not to be worrying too much about the head coach. First off season (for us) in a while where I've thought: there has been clear progress in the past 12 months and the HC has improved rather than got worse. Massive call to make on the QB. But I'll take Jimmy G or Baker Mayfield and let Wilson sit behind them for a season or two. A fit Jimmy G could take us to the play-offs. He's bang average - but that's an upgrade for us. The rest of the (talented) roster is begging for a half-decent play-caller..."

"McVay won't 'retire' as such. He might step away from the Rams, and the NFL, for a year or so. But my guess is he'll be back. Clearly one of those 'all in' blokes who throws every ounce of his weight at his job when he's in post. Some say he's suffering from 'burn out' as a consequence. I have no idea. I'm a bit old skool, and always a little sceptical about concepts like 'burn out'. Although I'm quite sure he's fucking knackered (physically and mentally) - is that the same thing?! He'll be back - he's clearly a good coach. Probably take a bit of time off and wait for Belichick or McCarthy to retire before having a chat with the Patsies and Cowboys..."

How does that work - I thought any AFC or NFC team could play each other depending on their finishing position the season before?

"Basically""¶even though they share a stadium and city, the Jets and Giants don't really ""hate""ù each other in the way the Jets hate, say, the Patsies and Fish. They only play mid-season games against each other every four years, which makes the rivalry ""tasty""ù rather than intense. The only other way they could play each other during a season would be a Super Bowl. New York would go into meltdown if that ever happened (unlikely, given how shite the Jets have been under these owners!)."
