Summer Transfer Window 2025 | Official Thread

Post stubbo-admin »

May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.

Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

It's almost August and I for one can't wait to see that same brilliant team that would have finished 16th were it not for beating an already-relegated Ipswich, but augmented by Southampton's amazing relegated full-back who all the giants like Besiktas wanted.

Oh yes.

Potter is highly likely to go with three centre halves - but five at the back - regularly next season.

It's his default line-up when, like many managers, he fears a whupping from the big-spending sides. It's also how he stemmed the flow of goals against us last season under Lopetegui. So being of limited ambition, and generally fearful of decent sides, he will get risk averse again and play 5-4-1 regularly. He'll tell you it's 3-4-3. But when you look at how deep we'll sit and map where the two wide full-backs are, plus the two "inside forwards" starting deeper, it will look like the same 5-4-1 that we fannied around with a lot last season.

You know, the system that bored us all to tears because we never shot at goal, had 108 men behind the ball most of the time, and went sideways alot. That one.

Brave new world.

We have 6 central midfielders, that's not including the yoofs that are coming through like Potts.

We need to get rid of some of those before we bring any in.

We still only have 1 striker, who's injury prone, on the books.

Looking very likely that the deal for Hadjari will be closed in next 48 hours. Terms agreed and FC Lugano want to sell. 22 and already played 60 games in Swiss league. Seems like an exciting prospect.

he is a CB (but can play FB). So we already have Kilman, Todibo, Aguerd and Mavropanos. So it looks like at least one is on the way. Aguerd linked to Roma but they only want a loan. Must admit Aguerd looks as fit as a fiddle.

Is Potter going with a 3 at the back?

We have ONE injury prone striker on the books.

I find it mental that people don't think this is the overriding priority.

And while on the topic of tedious and negative ( which is my calling ), still not a whisper about strengthening that slow, statuesque central midfield. We have Soucek, JWP, Alvarez, Irvine, Paqueta, Potts but unfortunately no one to fill that large gap Rice left.

While this area of the squad remains the same, everything else we do transfer wise will be undermined imo and any improvement on last season severely hampered.

Because we cant shift Cornet, Aguerd, Dinos, JWP abd wven Emerson, Im now preparing for Sullivan refusing to sanction the purchase of the 2 young, athletic, energetic, pacy centre mids we need and the 2nd striker we need.  Diouf and KWP and a new goalkeeper ( who I suspect is next thru the door) will not be enough to see much improvement.  The talk about Elliott and Morton, Fernandez from Southampton or the young lad at Leicester will continue but suspect nothing will happen.

Only chance now I see of getting some of the needed 4 players is if we sell Alvarez for a decent fee. Tbh he is probably the most saleable other than the “untouchables” like Bowen and AWB?

The problem is for the vast majority of clubs in Europe even 50k euros a week is a massive stretch and extremely unaffordable. There are only 2-3 clubs in most of these countries that have always been able to exist on a money is no object basis but they ain't signing players that were passed up on in the first place. If you've signed the wrong player and you're paying them upwards of 50k a week then you are fucked when it comes to selling them on. Unless you have a half decent player on your hands.

This is why you need a proper scouting network that does it's due diligence rather than relying on the word of an agent that is looking to clear the chaff from their books.

I see KWP has been announced on the OS, didn’t look for the cringe unveiling video, maybe still being edited?

Welcome to WHU though, let’s hope he’s as good as the other double barreled defender in AWB👍

Was reading about the Belgian centre half de Winter at Genoa
23 & can play all across the defence
Highly rated and available for about £20m with Genoa keen on Cornet who was there last season
Seems a no brainer as could then shift Mavropanos (or Aguerd if he wants to go) to pay for the whole thing

im so disappointed he didnt work out for us. But whats going on with Roma, stevie wonder must be scouting for them - or its a money racket.
Be really interesting to see if he does well there or not. That loan to us was mystifying. Definitely more than meets the eye to it
