Another game at the soulless bowl. All eyes will be on the team selection in the first instance, with the hope that we revert to the Everton form, and purge the experimentation of the last two games.

Nuno seems to have confirmed that for him Paqueta is a fixture in the side at 10, so suggestions he might make way look impossible. Fullkrug remains sidelined. Earthy is back in contention, and Mavro remains on the sidelines. Ezra Myers and Fin Herrinck have been called up to train with the first team.

Predicted LineUp:

Areola

Wan Bissaka
Todibo
Kilman
KWP

Potts
Fernandes

Bowen (c)
Paqueta
Summerville

Wilson

Subs:
Hermansen, Igor, Diouf, Magassa, Irving, Soucek, Marshall, Earthy, Guilherme

Predicted Result:
More of the same seems likely, with them on form and another side with a powerful aerial presence.

Hopefully that's the penny now dropped for Nuno, and I can start hoping we can stay up.

The only 'strange' tactical change I could see was swapping Kilman (right hand side) and Todibo (left hand side), but it worked.  Todibo had his best game for us.  Kilman was also better than he has been recently.
Exactly, great starting 11 (finally) then got rid of the striker with 30 mins to go and we struggled, he then kept replacing attackers with defenders.

I think the changes were the right ones. Newcastle were overloading as they chased the game, we matched them while keeping a threat on the counter, which we scored from as they threw everyone forward. Twice if you count the one ruled out by Soucek having bigger feet than the defender.

Made replacements and yet we still managed to put the ball in the net twice with 1 goal narrowly ruled out by the finest of margins. He shored us up and still made sure we had a goal threat trying to score more which I liked to see.

Yep, I said the same yesterday. Quite why a manager who loved passing for passing sake in our own half didn’t see fit to play a very good passing midfielder over Soucek is baffling. Maybe Potts passed forwards too frequently for him.

We won, I was entertained. Job done.

Nuno picked a sensible team, everyone in the right place and our consensus strongest 11
Bright start and then really cruelly punished and you got to thinking 'here we go again'. One of those particularly galling games where we lose but play bravely, knowing it would have been enough to beat leeds and maybe Brentford, and three crushing defeats..... but no.

We persevered really well though some setbacks and good goalkeeping to get our just reward and some luck of our own, earned through good play. Deserved 2-1 at the break.

Absolutely looked like a team bereft of wins in the second half where all we wanted to do was not concede. I get that. Fair enough in the circumstances. It worked. We looked solid and Areola didn't have tonnes to do. (I LOVED the shithousery at the end- everyone fucking does it to us and Arsenal in particular seem to get lauded for it, so fight fire with fire. We will need to be nasty and cynical this season so why not start now) Let's be real, we are in a serious hole so we'll have to do a lot of protecting slender leads if we get our noses in front going forward. Sling a bunch of defenders on and just try and hit teams on the break. We can do that. As long as we show ambition and braveness to come forward when level or losing, we can defend like the ghosts of Moyes in the last 20 when a goal up. That's fine. It's what happens in football in an important match no matter what team you are.

Job done. Gutted for Potts though but he was excellent. Sure Newcastle were not great but part of that was down to us and we managed to punish them for not being on their A game. That's a strong message to send out. We aren't going to be a pushover going forward. We were a pushover against Brentford and Leeds. Let's hope those points lost at Leeds don't come back to bite us because that was winnable.

Defence much improved. LOVED Areola getting some great punches on the ball. That's clearly been worked on. Apart from me shitting it when i saw Diouf on Woltemede, no danger from corners. Well done Kilman and Todibo. Todibo looked up for it. Like he had a point to prove. For the first time in a WHU shirt. He's clearly our most talented defender so let's hope he starts to show it. Having a sold MF in front of them helps. I liked sticking Soucek up front when Wilson was fucked given our lack of options. He will occupy space and defenders and do everything he can to be a nuisance- he doesn't have to play a lot of football and his weaknesses are minimised. Just try and get in the box when we break, or win a flick on or lay the ball off if he can while being physical against the defenders. You can always count on him to give you what he's got. I'd stick with this going forward until Fullkrug is fit. He and Wilson are nothing if not fucking game for a challenge. I don't like Wilson but I admire his willingness to fight and to try for us when he's got pretty little skin in the game as far as we are concerned. I like he clearly didn't like being left on the bench and had a point to prove- well, 100000 points if you believe the pay structure.... He could have gone through the motions when on the pitch though, but he didn't.

I'm hoping if we stay injury free or relatively, this lot should get us to January still in the mix, and a couple of canny acquisitions could really help. Desperately we need a proper, reliable, PL quality striker who can make an impact. We desperately need a leader at the back and a bit of depth in a few other places.

This felt like a new dawn. Hopefully not a false one. We should all be looking at three points against Burnley because that's very gettable if we play like today. We might even be able to scrap something against Liverpool and Man U like this. If we can get to 16-18 points by the end of the calendar year, we are in with a good chance of surviving here. Villa and Fulham are winnable. Now there's hope where before there was none.

A good all round team effort with Bowen leading the way from start to finish.

Midfield was tenacious and composed on the ball , defence probably had one of their easier days though Areola made a few smart stops in the first half in particular.

Makes picking the team a lot easier for the manager who got everything right this time , long may that continue.

Newcastle were a bit of a mess. Thought we took them apart in wide areas.

Need to follow it up next week - Burnley have accumulated a few decent results against the likes of Leeds, Wolves, Sunderland, so they'll be scrapping as a minimum.

They have only been taken to the cleaners by Man City and Spurs when away from home.

Forest play Leeds next weekend too, while Wolves are away at Chelsea.

As pleasing as yesterday’s result and performance was I have to say that Newcastle put in a team effort that was some way below the level of their constituent parts.

I am sure that Burnley will be a much harder not to crack Saturday.

If we can limp to January and be within touching distance of 17th or even in that position then hopefully we can add 2 or 3 and strengthen our bench.

The starting 11 was great, but our bench was shite. We need some quality depth in the wide areas and up top especially.

It really was an outstanding performance. Newcastle, although a bit inconsistent, have some really powerful dangerous players that can hurt you. Their midfield 3 of Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton won't often get out played and out muscled. But we took it to them and rolled them over. Their front three of Gordon, Murphy and the Woldermort are also dangerous on their day. But I thought Kilman and Todibo looked solid. Powerful and gutsy performances from the defenders.

But its what this performance has done mentally. The supporters will now be excited for Burnley game and it creates such a different atmosphere. And as will the players. They will really be looking forward to this game and they have a week to do more work on the training pitch.

I really do hate to say it, but I am going to say it. Yesterday felt like a turning point. When you see that we are capable of that it gives you such a lift as you get your hope back. First time for a long time yesterday I felt that pride of being a West Ham fan return.

Fantastic performance, fully deserved the 3 points. Felt like a long time since we've said that walking out of the bowl.

Potts and Fernandes were outstanding. Special mentions to Todibo and Paqueta also.

We showed some character after going 1 down and we looked threatening going forward. Tonnes of positives to take into the 6 pointer on saturday.

Those of us who are of a certain age know we have performances like that in us, but where I didn’t see the performance coming from was Todibo and to a slightly lesser degree Kilman, happy teat a massive portion of humble pie regarding the pair of them. Potts, massive breath of fresh air for the team and support.
One swallow doesn’t make a summer though and while I’m happy to take those points Burnley is probably more important now.
Now everyone knows that the team can get to that level it’s more important to sustain it, then we can hope for the greater escape.

Didn't agree with the substitutions but they certainly came off and that's what nuno gets paid for. He'd have been coated if they leveled it, and it was such an important win for the players and fans. As others have mentioned, you really could see what it meant to the players.
